Tóm tắt ngữ pháp thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Thì quá khứ hoàn thành (Past Perfect Tense) được sử dụng để diễn tả 1 hành động, sự việc xảy ra trước 1 hành động, sự việc khác. Hành động sau được chia ở thì quá khứ đơn.

Công thức thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Cách dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành

1. Diễn tả hành động, sự việc đã xảy ra và kết thúc trước 1 hành động, sự việc khác trong quá khứ.

VD: I had done my homework before I watched TV. 

(Tôi đã hoàn thành bài tập trước khi xem ti vi).

2. Diễn tả 1 hành động, sự việc xảy ra và kéo dài đến 1 thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.

VD: I hadn’t eaten until my parents went home. 

(Tôi vẫn chưa ăn cho đến khi bố mẹ tôi về).

3. Diễn tả một hành động, sự việc xảy ra trước 1 thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ.

VD: I had waited for him by dinner time. 

Tôi vẫn đợi anh ấy cho đến bữa tối.

4. Diễn tả 1 hành động hoặc sự kiện xảy ra như một sự chuẩn bị, tiền đề cho 1 hành động khác.

VD: I had reviewed grammar and exercises before my English exam.

(Tôi đã ôn ngữ pháp và bài tập trước bài kiểm tra tiếng anh).

5. Nói về sự thất vọng về sự việc nào đó trong quá khứ

I wished I had told the truth to her.

(Tôi ước là tôi đã nói sự thật cho cô ấy).

6. Ứng dụng trong câu điều kiện loại 3 diễn tả điều kiện không có thực trong quá khứ.

VD: If he had had breakfast, he would have been hungry and tired.

(Nếu anh ta ăn sáng thì anh ta đã không bị đói và mệt).

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Việc ghi nhớ dấu hiệu nhận biết giúp bạn làm tốt bài tập về thì quá khứ hoàn thành. Một số trạng từ thường xuất hiện trong câu sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành là:

• Until then: cho đến khi, đến lúc nào đó

• By the time: vào lúc, trước lúc nào đó

• Prior to that time

• Before: trước khi

• After: sau khi

• When by: khi nào, vào lúc

• By the end of: vào cuối lúc nào

• By the end of + time in the past …: vào cuối + 1 thời điểm trong quá khứ
